| According to the information obtained from
the Narmada Control Authority (NCA), the project has been accorded
investment clearance by the Planning Commission in October, 1988 for
Rs. 6,406.04 crores at 1896-87 price level. Revised estimate for the
project at 1991-92 price level is Rs. 13,180.62 crores which is yet
to be approved. A total amount of Rs. 14,362.24 crores has been incurred
on the project by the end of March, 2003 of which Rs. 1,698.48 crores
was incurred during the year 2002-03.

The NCA approves the phase-wise construction of dam after reviewing
the status of rehabilitation and environmental compliances. Raising
the height of dam from 90 m. to 110.64 m. was undertaken in 2004.
Estimated benefits from this project are as below :-
a) Electricity : Out of total 1,450 M.W. Maharashtra will get 27
percent
b) Irrigation : Out of total 28 Million Acre Feet of water,
Maharashtra's share is 0.25 MAF.
c) Others : Development of Fisheries.
The Supreme Court has given the final judgement in Writ Petition
No. 319/94 on October 18, 2000 and permitted the construction of
the dam upto 90.0 meters. The Supreme Court has further directed
that, “the permission to raise the dam height beyond 90.0
Mts. will be only paripassu and will be given by the Narmada Control
Authority, from time to time, after it obtains clearances from its
Relief and Rehabilitation Sub-Group and the Environment Sub-Group.
The R & R Sub Group will give clearance of further construction
after consulting the three Grievances Redressal Authorities.”
